Developed by the French, balayage is the system of "painting" highlights freehand onto select strands of hair. This application style lends itself particularly well to naturally wavy or curly hair. Simpler and less time-consuming than foil highlighting, balayage results in a natural, sun-kissed effect without the hard lines and obvious streaking that sometimes result from traditional foils. Color is applied more heavily to the ends to mimic the lighter tips of sun-kissed hair strands. The finished effect is a rich, shimmering, soft tone and perfectly random highlights reminiscent of a summer on the beach.
